There have been 83 Best Picture winners at the Academy Awards. Some are the greatest films in motion picture history, others not so much.

Here is how I separate the Casablanca’s from the Crash’s.

UNWORTHY WINNERS:

Slumdog Millionaire

Crash

Shakespeare In Love

Chariots Of Fire

My Interview With CRISPIN GLOVER

While he may be best remembered for his roles in Back To The Future, Willard and Charlie’s Angels, Crispin Glover has proven over the years that he also has unique talents in fields other than acting. For example, his current project The Big Slide Show.

I had the pleasure of interviewing Crispin Glover, who will be at the Enzian Theater tonight in Orlando, FL.

One Hit Oscar Wonders

As I was watching the new Gillette goatee trimmer commercial “starring” Adrien Broady, I began thinking about all the Oscar winners (like Brody) whose career’s went no where.

The music industry is riddled with one hit wonders, but the Academy Awards certainly has had it’s fair share of Oscar winners who fell off the movie map. Actors, Actresses, Writers, Directors…

Here is my list of one hit Oscar winners…

- ADRIEN BRODY (The Pianist)

- ROBERTO BENIGNI (Life Is Beautiful)

Who Are The Oscar Voters?

2012-oscar-predictions-nominations_01232012_144718

I’ve always wondered who were the Oscar voters and now I have a better clue as to who makes up this Academy.

The Academy Awards chooses its winners based on the votes of a select group of Hollywood insiders, but it turns out that group might be more select than we might think. According to a study conducted by The Los Angeles Times, the Academy, which boasts 5,765 members, is 94 percent Caucasian and 77 percent male.

Only 14 percent of the Academy is younger than 50, and as for its minority voters: Only 2 percent are African-American, while 2 percent are Latino.

My Best Picture Rankings

I’m very excited to be kicking off Oscar week here at VIP Movie Snob. I’ve decided to start things off with the biggest award there is… Best Picture.

Nine films were nominated and you could make a case for some excellent pictures that were left off the list. I believe The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, The Ides Of March, Drive and even J. Edgar were all major snubs. Perhaps the Academy needs to return to the days of only five nominated films, since a few of the nine I think were unworthy.

Here is how I personally rank the nine movies nominated for Best Picture. Quick note, I only saw eight of the nine. So by default, I must rank Midnight In Paris at #9 since I failed to see it.

9. MIDNIGHT IN PARIS*

I never got around to seeing it, but I’ve heard that it’s Woody Allen’s best film in years. The Academy must agree also, considering Woody was also nominated for directing and writing. It’s been 17 years since he was nominated in both categories.

8. HUGO

While this is far from his best film, it’s nice to see a legendary director like Scorsese spread his creative wings. Hugo isn’t one of the best films of the year, but it is a nice tribute to the beginning of cinema.
