With an estimated $36.2 million apiece, Cowboys & Aliens and The Smurfs finished for a tie at this weekend’s box-office. Pre-weekend tracking indicated that Cowboys would easily rope in more dollars. Captain America: The First Avenger came in next, the final Harry Potter hit another milestone, and Crazy, Stupid, Love. entered the Top Five in its debut.
Westerns have not fared well in this century and it seems Cowboys & Aliens has suffered the same fate. Despite having the producing team of Steven Spielberg and Ron Howard, the director of Iron Man 1 & 2 (Jon Favreau), a successful 007 (Daniel Craig) and perhaps the biggest box-office movie star of all-time (Harrison Ford).
Here are the rest of this weekend’s box-0ffice numbers.
1) COWBOYS & ALIENS ; THE SMURFS $36.2m
2) CAPTAIN AMERICA $24.9m
3) HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS: PART 2 $21.9m
4) CRAZY STUPID LOVE $19.3m
5) FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS $9.3m
Next weekend should be an interesting match up. We have the prequel, Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes, up against the switched personalities R-rated comedy, The Change-Up.
Ryan Reynolds is looking to rebound from the disappointing Green Lantern. My money is on the apes. The trailers have looked good and it’s been ten years since the public has seen a Planet Of The Apes film.
