Josh Brolin is going to the lead in Spike Lee‘s “Oldboy” remake.
There had been plenty of names swirling for the role, and as recently as last week it looked like Christian Bale was a major contender for the role, but now Deadline is reporting that Brolin is set for the part. That makes the “No Country For Old Men” star the first official cast member for the remake of the hit Korean revenge thriller.
“Oldboy” follows the story of a man who is kidnapped on his daughter’s birthday and was held for 15 years in solitary confinement without being given an explanation. Once he is finally released, the man sets out to seek revenge on the people who ruined his life. The South Korean movie was released in 2003 and was directed by Park Chan-wook.
The original is known for its shocking, controversial twist ending. An ending that makes me wonder if American audiences will be able to handle it.
Originally the remake was supposed to be directed by Steven Spielberg and star Will Smith. Then the rumor faded away for a while until it was announced in July that Spike Lee would direct it.
