This winter, a gaggle of Hollywood’s favorite film and television actresses can be seen performing eight shows a week for adoring fans on stages across Broadway. And the ladies are diverse as they are talented. Young fans of the hit Disney Channel show Hannah Montana will recognize Anna Maria Perez de Tagle, who played the not-so-nice Ashley Dewitt. The 20-year-old starlet is starring in the hit revival of Godspell at the Circle in the Square Theatre, opposite Weeds star Hunter Parrish. Younger audiences might also be interested in seeing the classic musical Anything Goes at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre, where Kelly Bishop of The Gilmore Girls is playing the stately Evangeline Harcourt.
Musical fanatics are flocking to see Stockard Channing, Rizzo from the classic film Grease, in the critically-acclaimed play Other Desert Cities at the Booth Theatre. And RENTheads will recognize Tracie Thoms, currently starring in the Alicia Keys-produced Stick Fly at the Cort Theatre, as Joanne, the fastidious lesbian lawyer from the film adaptation of Jonathan Larson’s Tony- and Pulitzer Prize-winning musical sensation, RENT. Interestingly, both actresses have also found success on television: Channing in The West Wing and Thoms in Cold Case. These multi-talented ladies are certainly worth the price of admission!
Fans of classic TV are delighted to be able to catch Marlo Thomas, star of the hit 1966-71 series That Girl, in a touching and hilarious role in Relatively Speaking, a series of one-act plays by Woody Allen, Ethan Cohen, and Elaine May, playing at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre. And fans of the hit Tony Danza vehicle Who’s the Boss? fondly remember the character of Angela Bower, portrayed by Judith Light. She is starring alongside Stockard Channing in Other Desert Cities as the family’s resident troublemaking lush. Light is getting rave reviews for this role, which is no surprise to those who follow her distinguished theatre career. All of these Hollywood stars breathe life into their live performances. This season, get out and experience what entertainment was like before TV and film, and experience the talent of some of your favorite actresses up close and personal!
