If you think that this year’s Golden Globes was dominated by Ricky Gervais’ insulting jokes, you better think twice. In fact, he was surprisingly tamer compared with his last year’s controversial hosting stint. And with the awarding ceremony peppered with phallic-themed jokes and a fair amount of tearjerking moments, nobody bothered to believe Gervais’ idea that Golden Globes has less esteem than Oscars. Do you want proof? Here are the five people (and pet) who clearly upstaged Gervais to grab the best moments of this year’s Golden Globes:
Golden Globe For A Cause
When “Game of Thrones” star Peter Dinklage received his best supporting actor award, he selfishly put the spotlight to a fellow little person: “I want to mention a gentleman I’m thinking about in England. His name is Martin Henderson. Google him.” Henderson became an instant trending topic and it’s not long before viewers realized that Henderson is the latest victim of a ridiculous “dwarf-tossing” game in England. It’s one of the best highlights of the event that used the stage as a platform for a more worthy cause.
And the Best Dog Award goes to….
Of course, it’s Uggie, the only canine who made an impressive effort to grace the annual awarding ceremony. Uggie is the Jack Russell Terrier of “The Artist”, which won the Best Motion Picture—Comedy or Musical. The award also gave an opportunity for producer Thomas Langmann to leave a very inspiring acceptance speech by relating the story of how his father, Claude Berri, couldn’t afford the plane fare to come over to the States to collect his own Oscar in 1965.
Marilyn’s little girl
When the My Week With Marilyn star Michelle Williams won Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture—Comedy or Musical, she made a heartfelt speech not for Marilyn Monroe (who won the same award 50 years ago) but for her daughter whom she read bedtime stories in a breathless Marilyn voice for six months as a preparation for her notable role. The 31 year-old single parent told the crowd: ‘I consider myself a mother first and an actress second, and so the person I most want to thank is my daughter, my little girl, whose bravery and exuberance is the example that I take with me in my work and in my life.’
The Iron Lady without her glasses on.
Margaret Thatcher might be disgusted but Meryl Streep emerged victorious after winning the best actress award for her portrayal of the former British Prime Minister in the movie The Iron Lady. She told the crowd that her win was “really embarrassing in a year that saw so many extraordinary performances by women in leading roles,” and then she she thanked England for letting her ‘trample over their history’, adding only to the growing controversy about the film’s “distorted’ portrayal of the Lady Thatcher. But Streep made one of the major highlights of the event when she had left her eyeglasses on the table, forcing her to make her speech on-the-spot. The great actress swore at the beginning of her speech when she realised this. ‘Ooooh s*** oh my glasses, I forgot my glasses, now I have to remember my speech,’ she said. She made another unforgettable speech, nonetheless.
