Being nominated for an Oscar is an actor’s ultimate goal. To be considered the best of the best in your craft must be an amazing feeling.
So I’m here to rain on a few parades. Sorry in advance.
Yesterday, there were so many worthy contenders shut out. Leo, Gosling, Fassbender, Charlize, etc.
Here are some actors/actresses/films that did not deserve an Oscar nomination (IMHO).
BEST PICTURE
Hugo was a nice sentimental piece done by Scorsese to express his love for cinema. Being nice doesn’t mean it deserved to be honored. I could also make the case that The Tree Of Life was not worthy, just because it was like watching moving art doesn’t mean you can go on without a plot. But I do believe the Academy got it right this year with 9 nominations for the category. What I don’t understand is how Drive, The Girl With Dragon Tattoo and The Ides Of March were left out.
BEST ACTOR
I’m so glad Gary Oldman (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) finally got his first Oscar nomination, even though this was not his best performance. As for Demian Bichir, I didn’t see A Better Life…but then again, neither did you. I respect both actors here, but I’m still shocked Leonardo DiCaprio (J. Edgar), Michael Fassbender (Shame) or Ryan Gosling (Drive/Ides Of March) didn’t get a nomination.
BEST ACTRESS
Not too many complaints here. 2011 was the strongest year in film for women in over a decade. Could have had at least 8 women up for best actress.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
While most consider Albert Brooks (Drive) to be the biggest snub, I think it was Armie Hammer (J. Edgar). Who’s spot should he have taken? I loved Moneyball, but I wasn’t all that impressed with Jonah Hill’s turn in it.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
This is my largest (no pun intended) complaint. Melissa McCarthy was great in Bridesmaids. A very funny performance, but she wasn’t even the funniest woman in it. That movie belonged to Kristen Wiig. No offense to McCarthy, but just because she is a funny fat girl doesn’t mean she deserves an Oscar nom. What’s her Oscar clip going to be? Crapping in a sink?
