Hollywood seriously needs to go to reboot rehab.
Remember the 2004 summer box-office bomb Van Helsing (which starred Hugh Jackman)? It has risen from the grave!
Universal has announced that Tom Cruise is attached to both star in and produce a new version of Van Helsing with Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman on-board as well. Kurtzman and Orci’s biggest claim to fame was writing the script for the J.J. Abrams-directed Star Trek reboot, but their other credits include the first two Transformers movies, Mission: Impossible III and the television series Fringe. In addition to Van Helsing, the writing/producing duo is also planning on bringing back The Mummy.
“Van Helsing” is a project the studio has been working on for a while, eager to put the failed Stephen Sommers/Hugh Jackman version behind them. Back in June 2010, they hired Guillermo Del Toro to produce/direct/write this reboot. A month later Del Toro left ”Van Helsing” to go make “At The Mountains Of Madness” with Tom Cruise but that ended up in development hell.
It seems Cruise never took his eye off this Van Helsing project. But why? That movie is only 8 years old and doesn’t Cruise want to return to more award friendly material?
