Jeremy Renner’s Aaron Cross will return, but will Matt Damon’s Jason Bourne?
Even though 2012′s The Bourne Legacy didn’t live up to Identity/Supremacy/Ultimatum, Universal is going ahead with a fifth installment in the spy franchise.
Anthony Peckham (Invictus, Sherlock Holmes) has been hired to write the script, which means Tony Gilroy (who wrote all four Bourne screenplays and directed Legacy) is probably out of the picture.
The movie will continue the story of Aaron Cross, the medically enhanced operative who was part of a Treadstone-like program known as Outcome, but ended up on the run when the government decided to hunt Cross down following the trouble that Jason Bourne caused.
Universal is desperate to bring back Matt Damon as Jason Bourne and team him up with (or even against) Renner’s Cross. After Damon turned down $25 million the last time, I don’t see how they can get him back into the fold.
Some potential titles for this latest “Bourne” movie could be The Bourne Betrayal, The Bourne Deception, The Bourne Objective.
Or as Matt Damon and his Bourne Supremacy/Ultimatum director Paul Greengrass referred to the last Bourne flick… The Bourne Redundancy.
